Adventure Overview (SPOILERS)
While this adventure could be tweaked to play for other Ordos, it was written around Ordo Hereticus themes.
The primary story intentions of this investigative adventure are to:
- Emphasize the ties between Ordo Hereticus and the Ecclesiarchy
- Use the setting of Hive Tarsus and the Burning of the Sins holy day
- Show that not every investigation has to involve chaos
- Foreshadow the Serrated Query's existence
GM's running this adventure should familiarize themselves with: Hive Tarsus (rulebook pg. 294) and the Burning of the Sins (Inquisitor's Handbook pg 197) This adventure was written for a group of 5 acolytes at Rank 1. To scale it up for more advanced groups, the statistics on the adversaries, especially the arco-flagellant and the weapons on Janks and Courier, should be improved.
The Apostate Bishop Saren was excommunicated in 797.M41 for preaching that other paths to salvation exist besides the Emperor. Since that time he has perpetrated numerous terrorist acts centered against the Ecclesiarchy. Among his many associates is Darsea Shavertine, the daughter of a dead noble in Hive Tarsus. Darsea's father died in 801.M41 when he tried to be absolved at the Burning of the Sins, and a priest levied a tithe that would have made Shavertine's family paupers. Rather than break his family, Darsea's father threw himself into the fires. Since then, Darsea has secretly hated the clergy, and especially the Burning of the Sins.
Darsea and Saren have devised a plan to disrupt the Burning of the Sins being conducted by Cardinal Ignato (highest ranking member of the Ecclesiarchy in the Calixis sector) at the Cathedral of Illumination in Hive Tarsus. Through the advanced chymerical knowledge of Saren's contacts in the Serrated Query (who Saren is considering joining at the time this adventure takes place), they have come up with a special compound that produces a subtle golden glow when burned. However, it leaves a residue with a critical mass. If enough of the compound collects in a heat source, it will explode in a wave of flames.
They have duped the trade house Guild Sphixian into thinking the compound is harmless, and commissioned 500,000 sin receptacles coated in the substance. Sin Receptacles are special parchment that participants in the burning of the sins write their misdeeds upon. They are sold by street vendors in the days leading up to the Burning of the Sins. Their plan is for their special receptacles to be distributed to the populace, and to disrupt the proceedings lead by the Cardinal with a wave of fire, as though the hand of the Emperor himself reached out from the fire in protest at the hypocrisy.
One of Saren's agents, a man named Davis Janks, has been put in charge of finalizing the transaction with House Sphixian. Janks' is a wanted man and his connection to the Bishop is known. They recently noted a large amount of credit given to an account in his name held by a Banker's Guild. Ariel Dice, an informant to the PC's Inquisitor, has spotted Janks in Hive Tarsus. These two facts together, along with the upcoming Burning of the Sins, have Ordo Hereticus concerned that Saren is up to something. The PC's are sent to Hive Tarsus to investigate. They will be under strict orders to stay under the radar, since if Saren is in Tarsus, any word of Inquisition questions is sure to ruin chances of finding him.
They will need to locate Janks, and learn of the transaction and the altered Sin Receptacles. While simply figuring out the plan and the location of the receptacles will be enough to stop the heretical act from taking place, it will be obvious Janks is just a pawn, and a bigger fish (possibly the Bishop himself) is involved. More investigation will lead back to Darsea Shavertine and her compound in the depths of the inverted Hive Tarsus, where she is well protected.
Customization: If alluding to the Serrated Query is not appropriate to your campaign, their involvement could easily be removed by simply not specifying who developed the formula for the tainted sin receptacles, and removing their mention from Saren's letter. Although the Hereticus/religious themes of this adventure are intrinsic to the plot, it could be run for a Malleus or Xenos group by changing the nature of Saren's terrorism. If he is known to have be allied with chaos or xenos, this could put him on an Ordo wanted list, so his involvement would make the investigation of interest to the appropriate Ordo.
And the warp gazed back...
